Viset Namibia

Our History

Founded in 2018, VISET Namibia (Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation – Namibia) emerged as a regional chapter of a continental movement advocating for the empowerment and recognition of informal economy workers. From its early days, the organization has focused on transforming the informal sector from survival-based trading into a vibrant driver of economic inclusion and urban development.

Our History

Timeline

VISET Namibia was officially established in 2018 as a non-partisan, membership-based NGO. Its founding vision was to amplify the voices of informal traders—street vendors, market traders, hawkers, home-based entrepreneurs, and others—by advocating for their inclusion in Namibia’s economic and policy frameworks. During this phase, the organization built its core structure and began forming partnerships with local authorities and informal trader associations nationwide.

As challenges facing the informal economy grew, VISET Namibia intensified its advocacy efforts to promote fair policies, legal protection, and inclusive governance. The organization also launched research initiatives to gather data on informal sector realities, ensuring that its advocacy was grounded in evidence and real community needs.

This period marked a shift toward practical empowerment. VISET Namibia rolled out training workshops, awareness campaigns, and capacity-building programs aimed at strengthening the resilience, visibility, and business sustainability of informal traders. The organization also increased its representation in national development dialogues, ensuring informal workers had a seat at the table.

Today, VISET Namibia continues to lead efforts in inclusive urban planning and infrastructure development. The organization advocates for the creation of safe, dignified, and functional trading environments that recognize informal workers as essential partners in building equitable and dynamic cities. Through research, partnerships, and policy engagement, VISET Namibia remains committed to transforming livelihoods and shaping Namibia’s future economy.
